Andrea is a thought leader on women investors. Her recent book Harness the Power of the Purse: Winning Women Investors is the culmination of nearly three years of research across six countries in partnership with think tank the Center for Talent Innovation where she serves as a Senior Advisor. Her work has been featured in the Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Inc., Fortune, NPR, Wall Street Journal, among other media outlets. 

Turner Moffitt is the co-founder of Plum Alley Investments, a private investment platform committed to increasing the base of capital for gender diverse teams while creating a powerful and engaging experience for a broader base of investors. As a former investment banker and hedge fund analyst, Turner Moffitt has extensive investing background across various asset classes. An honors graduate from Columbia Business School and the School of International and Public Affairs, she earned her BA from Tulane University.


Favorite / least favorite thing about your role
I’m deeply passionate about changing the game for women investors. I genuinely believe we can create a transformational shift in the world by better engaging women as investors to direct capital towards what we want to see in the world. Having co-founded Plum Alley Investments and written, “Harness the Power of the Purse”, I feel incredibly lucky to spend every waking hour on this mission. I get to meet amazing women – both investors and entrepreneurs – who have incredible ideas and insights that we amplify as part of Plum Alley. My least favorite thing is not having enough hours in the day. There is so much opportunity but the reality for any start-up is that you have to stay focused on where you can deliver the most value. As we grow Plum Alley, I’m excited to expand the number of investments and experiences we can offer our members. I also wish someone could figure out how we can be in two places at once – especially with having two little kids!


Something you wish you knew at the start of your career
Two key lessons I’ve learned over the years, which are mantras that I try to remind myself of each day: “Clarity comes from engagement,” and, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. And, don’t be afraid to fail.” On the first, you have to jump in and start doing and things become clearer along the way.  On the second, I am a classic perfectionist, which I think held me back early in my career. It’s more important to get out a product or service and get feedback than spend too much time perfecting.


Mistakes on the job / tough lessons learned
I can remember a couple of instances when I made a mistake with a client. I always find the most important thing is to own the mistake, fix it to the extent possible and to have humility in the process. It’s also important to remember that when people on your team make mistakes. We are all human. What’s most important is what we learn from our mistakes and the grace with which we handle it.

Biggest accomplishment
This is a tough question. I am personally striving for my biggest accomplishment, which is to successfully grow and scale Plum Alley for massive impact. I am incredibly excited about the impact we’ve already had growing to 200+ members and deploying $3MM of investment capital in less than 18 months. I’m also proud of taking the risk of leaving banking and listening to my inner voice challenging me to ignite what I believe is one of the most important conversations of our generation: giving women an equitable seat at the table as investors. The research and the book were a huge undertaking over two years. While it was challenging at times, the learnings I shared in the book have offered a meaningful roadmap for the new investing model we’re creating at Plum Alley and I hope offers inspiration for the rest of the industry.

If you weren’t doing your current job...
Honestly, I can’t imagine anything else I’d rather be doing.

Favorite NYC restaurant
Monument Lane in the West Village – but I’m biased because we are investors and my good friend Josh Frum is the owner.

Something you do outside of work 
I’m a big believer in the importance of early childhood education and sit on an advisory committee for the Brooklyn Kindergarten Society. I also love to run and meditate – it’s the best way to clear my head and set priorities to maintain as much balance as possible.
