Over a few cups of coffee and some avocado toast, Stash Wealth Founding Partner, Priya Malani, and the Synergist Board chatted about personal investing best practices, renting vs. buying, and why millennials may not need to give up those little indulgences (like that avocado toast). A new model for asset management, Stash Wealth focuses on investing for HENRY’s – or those of us not yet wealthy enough for a manager at a major bank, but still in need of a financial plan. Senior Sound Bites:
Priya Malani

Founding Partner, Stash Wealth
I started working at Merrill Lynch in 2003, right out of college. I worked in both wealth management and capital markets - mostly dealing with qualified investors and UHNW clientele. I spent some time in residential and commercial real estate as well as it was an area of interest

Responsibilities in current role
In my role as founder + CEO I wear many hats. Depending on the day, I could be working on business development, compliance, content + SEO strategy, hiring or partnerships and events

Favorite thing about your role
I think my favorite part of my job is working to figure out how to make financial planning available to my generation. While I don't do as many client meetings as I used to, I really enjoy educating people on how to be smarter with their money

Most challenging thing about your role
Part of the reason I started Stash was because I love working with clients but as a business owner, I don't get to do that as much. At Stash, we are building something that hasn't been built before. In that sense, we have no one to model ourselves after. It's both challenging and freeing to experiment and learn as we go

Something you wish you knew at the start of your career
This one is tough because even if I knew back then what I know now, I needed those early experiences to help shape the way I think today. So to say "I wish I knew I wanted to be a business owner back then" wouldn't have been very helpful because it was what I learned at the start of my career and throughout the first few years that helped me to build the company I run today

Mistakes on the job / tough lessons learned
Our brand went viral on it's own. I hired PR about a year later, thinking they could replicate that experience but unfortunately, they couldn't and that's not how PR works. Don't hire PR unless you truly understand or need it! It was a costly mistake

Biggest accomplishment
Building Stash into a national brand that serves H.E.N.R.Y.s™ in 27 states and counting

Best piece of financial planning advice for H.E.N.R.Y.s
Get a plan. There will never be a good time to get your [financial] sh*t together but the sooner you start, the less you'll have to compromise

If you weren’t doing your current job...
I'd love to be a writer for Food + Wine Magazine

Mamouns Falafel hands down! Ippudo is probably a close second

Something you do outside of work
Ski in the winters, soak up the sun in the summers :)

Anything we haven’t asked about that you’d like to share?
Nope, I think that just about covers it! Thanks so much, this was fun!
